Green Electricity: Frequently Asked Questions

What is green electricity?

Green (also called renewable or sustainable) electricity is produced by resources which naturally replenish themselves such as biomass, geothermal, landfill gases, solar and wind. This is in contrast to energy produced from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

Why do we need green electricity?

We need to switch to green electricity for 2 main reasons:

  • To reduce the output of carbon dioxide and other 'greenhouse' gases which are so damaging to our environment. This reduction would also help to meet the UK's commitment under the Kyoto agreement (an international agreement aimed at reducing emissions which cause global warming).
  • To reduce our dependency on fossil fuels which are rapidly being depleted within the UK. This will also help to keep energy affordable because we will not have to rely on imported fuel.

How would I receive Green Electricity?

Green electricity is provided through the National Grid in exactly the same way as non-green electricity.

How easy is it to switch to a green tariff?

Very simple; most power companies require only a phone call and the change can be implemented immediately.

How much would it cost me?

Some energy Companies are providing 'green tariffs' for the same price as ordinary tariffs. However in general a green tariff is slightly more expensive but most people are happy to pay this to help the environment and encourage investment in renewable energy. (Typical green tariffs range from 5.01p per kWh to 10.05p per kWh while non-green electricity averages about 5.6p per kWh).

What is the South Gloucestershire's Climate Challenge?

National Friends of the Earth established 'Climate Challenge 2004' to encourage individuals across the UK to improve our climate in a tangible way. South Gloucestershire FoE is supporting this initiative by aiming to persuade at least 50 households to switch to a green electricity supplier this year.

Where can I get more information?

More information on Green Electricity can be obtained from The Friends of the Earth website.

What do I do next?

Please read the material and, if you are considering a switch to a green tariff, please do email Denise so that we can assess the level of interest in green electricity. This information will be used solely by S. Glos FoE and will not be passed on to any third party.
