Act NOW to save our green fields

As you will have read in the West of England Vision write-up, we are campaigning to save our green fields from a massive building programme in the next 20 years. The threat is that an estate of 30,000 to 60,000 or more dwellings could be built on green-field sites on the edge of the existing uban area, although we do not know where. There will be another 60,000 dwellings built within the Bristol built-up area. There will also be corresponding Business Parks to employ all those people.

To appreciate the scale of this development, it will increase the population of Bristol by about 40%. The green-field development is equivalent to about four to eight Bradley Stokes, and will occupy several square miles.

The main focus of the campaign will be letter-writing. We know this works, and if key decision-makers receive a hundred letters they will be seriously worried. If they receive a thousand letters they will probably think again. There will also be a consultation exercise in the next few weeks.

We need as many people as possible to write letters. If you just want to write one letter, write to the chair of the West of England Partnership, telling him that such rapid growth is not acceptable, and that the existing green belt should not be built on. The address is:

     Councillor Michael Roe
     Chair West of England Partnership
     c/o North Somerset Council
     Town Hall,
     Walliscote Grove Road,
     Weston-super-Mare,
     Somerset, BS23 1UJ

If you can, get your neighbours, friends, colleagues and family to write as well.

If you would be willing to do more, please write or email Alan Pinder at the address on the back of this newsletter. He will let you know of further letters you can write and how to respond to the consultation. Please let Alan Pinder know what you have done.
