We have yet another consultation for a major transport study for the Bristol area. The consultation is on proposals produced by the Greater Bristol Strategic Transport Study. This study was commissioned by the Government to look at transport strategy for the next 25 years.
The report proposes big spending on transport including new roads and road improvements, a rapid transit system and rail and bus improvements. Most of the spending will be in south Bristol, including extending the Ring Road from Keynsham round the south of Bristol to the M5. In South Gloucestershire, the M4 will be widened and motorway junctions will be 'improved'. Parkway station will have two new platforms and Yate station will be improved. The rapid transit will be mostly in south Bristol, but will come to Emersons Green, the Stoke Gifford area and Cribbs Causeway.
Friends of the Earth welcomes the public transport improvements, but is concerned about the extensive road proposals. They will increase traffic by making it easier to drive around Bristol, creating more traffic on our local roads. Roads are very expensive and could soak up most of the available money. In addition the road works will cause disruption and delays, especially on the motorways.
Friends of the Earth would also strongly support the introduction of parking charges and congestion charges. These are the only real way of reducing traffic congestion, and the income can be used to significantly improve public transport and create a real alternative to driving.
Please respond to the consultation if you can. The details of the proposals and online consultation form can be seen on the web site. Leaflets are available in libraries and council offices or by writing to
