Transport Plan

The local provisional Transport Plan has been published. It is a joint Plan by the four Councils covering the former Avon area, so we will be working with other FoE groups to produce a response. This Transport Plan is a bid for government money and describes various projects the Councils want the government to pay for over the next five years. The main projects are the showcase bus routes, which will have electronic information, wheelchair access and other improvements. This is something we strongly support. Investment in buses is much more cost-effective than trams or railways, so we get more benefit for the limited pot of money available. We will not solve the traffic and transport problems with buses alone, but this is a good place to start. In the longer term, congestion charging could reduce traffic and provide funds for public transport, but this is politically difficult. A good bus service will make congestion charging more acceptable.

However, in the longer term the Councils are planning more roads rather than congestion charging, so we need to fight this.
