The public consultation has started on the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS).
This is the regional plan that calls for 92,500 dwellings to be built in the Bristol area in the next 20 years, plus corresponding jobs. This is more than half the number of dwellings in Bristol City. Large areas of green belt and urban open space will be lost for ever. The traffic will increase substantially. There will be increasing water shortages.
We want as many people as possible to respond to the consultation. They normally only get a few responses to these documents from developers, statutory bodies and environment groups. They are not yet aware that there is real anger about these proposals, so a big response from the public is very important.
A guide to the relevant parts of the RSS and some suggested responses are [below/opposite]. The consultation asks what changes you want to the proposals and why. Of course you can respond as you think, and it is most effective if you give your own reasons in your own words.
The draft RSS can be seen here. For the Bristol area, the key parts are in section 4, starting on page 5. The Bristol and Bath area is referred to as the West of England.
You can respond online or on paper. The forms and a link to the draft RSS can be found at the consultation website. Responses can be emailed to here, or paper responses can be sent to
