Climate Change Bill

As you may have heard on the news, as a result of massive lobbying by FoE and other organisations, the Climate Change Bill was in the Queen's Speech again this year. It should become law in the next twelve months. The Government's Bill is better than nothing, but we think it should be much stronger. It should:-

  • reduce emissions every year to a target of 80% cuts by 2050
  • include annual targets so politicians can't blame each other
  • include emissions from aviation

Steve Webb MP in Northavon is already supporting us, and does not need more lobbying. So South Glos FoE is focusing local lobbying on two local labour backbench MPs - Roger Berry in Kingswood and David Drew in Stroud. The more people who send postcards to these two MPs the better.

If you are a constituent of either of these MPs, or know someone who is, then please ring Alan Pinder on 01454-416778. He will send you all you need, including a short leaflet about what we want and pre-printed postcards to sign and send off.

We expect the Bill to come to the House of Commons in January. We think we can get the amendments we want, but we need to move quickly to get our local MPs signed up.

Alan
