US writer says GM food is dangerous

We were very fortunate to get a visit in the summer from Jeffrey Smith, the distinguished American writer and expert on Genetically Modified (GM) food. He told a public meeting at Acton Court that GM food has never been properly tested and is potentially dangerous.

Jeffrey Smith was touring Europe, lobbying politicians and promoting his new book “Genetic Roulette”. He is the author of the best-selling GM food book “Seeds of Deception”, which uncovered the way the bio-technology companies had deceived the US regulators and US government into thinking GM food is safe. Jeffrey Smith said that the technology to make GM food is very new and very hit-and-miss. He described five risks in great detail, and explained that the testing would not protect us from any of them. Each risk is a way that toxins could potentially get into humans from GM food crops.

Most American consumers eat GM foods every day. He said that there has been a dramatic increase in the US in allergies, dementia, cancer and other medical problems, and no-one knew whether any of them is caused by GM food. GM crops are routinely fed to animals in Europe, so animal products such as meat, dairy products and eggs could contain toxins. Jeffrey Smith said these toxins could have an effect immediately or years after eating them.

Jeffrey Smith ended on a positive note, praising environmental campaigners and the attitude of consumers in this country and in Europe. He was confident that a similar campaign in America against GM food was gaining momentum and the GM industry would be stopped in two years. Some of the things Jeffrey Smith was saying were very scary. He has spent many years researching GM and he clearly knew his subject in great depth. The politicians in this country and in Europe should listen to this man and stop GM crops from getting into our food chain or from being released into the environment.
