There are so many environmental issues to discuss including: climate change, GM crops and food, sustainability, transport, biodiversity, affordable housing and waste management. Our recently introduced members evenings offer an informal forum for us all to engage in discussing environmental issues; furthermore, they offer an opportunity to talk about our group and its activities.
Our last meeting was held in Kingswood in March and we had two speakers. First, Alan Pinder gave a presentation on what the householder can do to reduce the carbon footprint of their home and secondly, Rosemary Caldicott discussed sustainable tourism. It was gratifying to see members there who have not been able to make our other meetings in the past.
Continuing our series of members meetings the next one will be held on Wednesday 6th June at the Swan Inn, Duck Street, Tytherington (GL12 8QB) from 7.30pm onwards. We will aim to finish the main event at 9.30pm but there is always the opportunity to continue our discussions in the bar area afterwards! For those using Tom-Tom, Streetwise or some other form of navigation/electronic map the postcode is GL12 8QB. Typing the name of the pub in Google will also give sites that include maps.
At this members evening we aim to run a short environmental quiz then Stuart Shales will give a short presentation on 'Tidal Energy from the River Severn'. There will be plenty of time for a forum and socializing. Please do feel free to bring your friends along, they will be most welcome.
If you have any ideas for future venues, topics or speakers then please do let us know. We would welcome any volunteers who would like to give a presentation! These events are very informal so don't be shy! The next event is planned for the 19th September.
In addition to our quarterly members evenings we are introducing changes in the structure of our two-weekly meetings where we are adding an Open Forum item so that members can raise any environmental issue they want to discuss. We will still need to cover some of the routine organizational matters for our ongoing campaigns at these meetings but the Open Forum should add a bit of diversity and interest!
We welcome your views and ideas about how we run the group, our activities and what you think are the key environmental issues. Please do feel free to contact us. Your interest and input is most important!
Stuart
