PRESS
RELEASE
16 June 2004
Friends of the Earth is launching a campaign to get consumers in South Gloucestershire to sign
up for green electricity. They are asking people to buy their electricity from
companies that only use renewable sources, such as windmills, hydro-electric
and solar power, that do not cause global warming.
Friends of the Earth recommend four
suppliers, Good Energy, Ecotricity old energy tariff,
Green Energy100 and Scottish and Southern RSPB Energy. Alan Pinder of Friends of
the Earth said, “Everyone can do their bit to reduce global warming by buying
electricity from renewable sources. Electricity generated by burning gas, oil
or coal is a major cause of climate change, and may lead to a disaster like
that shown in the film The Day after tomorrow. By buying this electricity we
are encouraging the electricity companies to carry on pumping out tons of the
climate-changing CO2 gas into the atmosphere.”
Friends of the Earth have arranged a public
meeting on green energy to be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 23rd
July in the Greenfield Centre in Winterbourne. The guest speaker will be Gary
Freedman of Ecotricity. Anyone interested in learning
more about renewable energy is invited to go along on that evening. There is no
admission charge for this event.
